COX-2 inhibitors background information
Arthritis pain is one of the most prevalent
medical problems in the world and afflicts tens
of millions of people. For those who suffer from
rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis (degenerative
arthritis) the pain can be chronic and disabling.
Relief from arthritis pain is critical in order
improve their functional ability and—importantly—their
overall quality of life.
Since the synthesis of aspirin in 1897, inhibitors
of cyclooxygenase (an enzyme that controls inflammation)
have been a major source of relief from arthritis
pain. These drugs are now collectively called
non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
They are the world’s most commonly prescribed
class of drugs. Non-prescription forms of NSAID's
are also very popular (such as ibuprofen).
Celebrex - a type of COX-2 inhibitor
At the time of this article, the newest generation
of NSAIDs is called COX-2 selective inhibitors.
A brand name of this type of medication is Celebrex.
COX-2 inhibitors such as Celebrex represent
a significant advancement in non-steroidal anti-inflammatory
treatment for pain because, while they are as
efficacious as older NSAIDs, they have far less
risk of side effects (such as blood thinning
or stomach ulceration).
Editorial note:
In addition, new potential risks and side effects of COX-2 inhibitors have been studied. For more information, please see Understanding COX-2 inhibitor side effects.
